Enhanced EHR Functionality Makes It Easier for Independent Medical Practices to Comply With MACRA and Earn Positive Payment Adjustments
IRVINE, Calif., January 30, 2018 –Kareo, a leading provider of cloud-based clinical and business management software for independent medical practices, today announced that Kareo Clinical passed the 2015 Edition Health IT Certification Criteria. Kareo’s EHR (electronic health records) includes a range of features that help reduce provider workload and improve delivery of patient care. Kareo has taken this same user friendly approach in enabling providers to comply with MACRA requirements. Clinicians using Kareo Clinical EHR are not asked to enter additional data for reporting on MIPS measures. Providers simply chart as usual, and Kareo’s automated reporting and tracking system keeps them on the path to earning the most in positive adjustments.
"Kareo Clinical was designed by practicing doctors to be intuitive and integrated with the provider workflow," said Dan Rodrigues, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kareo. "Our clinical functionality enables physicians to spend their valuable time with patients, versus their EHR. We have taken this same approach with the enhanced functionality needed for clinicians to meet their MACRA regulatory needs, giving providers the ability to focus on providing meaningful care versus the attestation process.”
Despite the potential monetary benefits and penalties – which for the 2018 performance period could be plus or minus $50,000 for a practice billing $1 million in Medicare Part B claims – many practices are not participating in MACRA, often because of the additional data entry and workload that it presents. Kareo Clinical is designed to reduce clinician burden and helps independent practices take advantage of the positive incentives in Medicare reimbursements available through MACRA compliance:
- With Kareo Clinical, MACRA compliance is easier because it’s built into the provider workflow. Providers can continue their normal daily activity and chart patients as usual, without additional data entry or workload for MIPS reporting. The built-in reporting engine pulls patient data from encounters to support selected measures.
- Clinicians can always know where they stand with their MIPS performance using the at-a-glance performance tracking dashboards. A setup wizard helps them walk through the steps for selecting measures. Afterward, the dashboards show progress scores on MIPS Quality and Advancing Care Information measures. Clinicians are also prompted with tips on how to improve scores.
- In addition to its unique user friendly MIPS reporting system, Kareo Clinical provides functionalities that meet 2015 certification criteria calling for: viewing, downloading and transmitting health information to a third party; secure messaging; patient health information capture; transitions of care; and application programming interfaces (APIs)
"I love that Kareo's EHR provides an easier way to report on measures that doesn’t require additional data collection or additional workload for the physician," said Louis Saltzman, Office Manager at Marc Alan Saltzman, M.D. P.A.
Achieving 2015 Edition certification is a significant step for EHR suppliers, and Kareo is among an increasingly smaller group of companies maintaining Meaningful Use certification. With each additional level of regulatory requirements, the list of Meaningful Use and MACRA-compliant EHR products has declined significantly. When the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services first began regulating EHR use in 2011, the market was flooded with over 500 EHR vendors. This number dropped by a third for the 2014 Edition certification; and according to the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), in 2018 slightly more than 100 vendors have passed the most recent certification criteria (2015 Edition).
