About Referring Physicians

Referring physicians are generally third-party physicians who have referred patients to various providers within the practice. Entering referring physicians is important for several reasons. First, many insurance companies require information about referring physicians for proper reimbursement. Second, you can use analysis reports that enable you to track the income generated from referrals. Finally, the referring physician records include information you may need in order to contact the referring physician.

An application administrator or other designated member with appropriate user permissions can create a list of referring physicians or make changes to individual referring physician records directly from theSettingsmenu.

A referring physician record can also be added by any user within the medical or billing office that has permission to add or edit patient records. If a user enters a patient record and clicks the Referring Physician selector button to add a referring physician to the record and finds that the referring physician is not already in the system, the user can add the physician to the list and, at the same time, link that referring physician to the patient directly from the patient record.
