We’ve received questions recently regarding Kareo’s readiness for the transition to the new HIPAA 5010 electronic format. Rest assured, Kareo is on track with our preparation and expects to be testing by the end of October. In the meantime, we have confirmed with our clearinghouse partners that they are ready and also able to translate from 4010 to 5010 depending on what the Payer can accept.
We are actively communicating with our Clearinghouse partners to be sure that the transition for you is seamless as possible and does not interrupt your claims processing.
Kareo will not require 5010 testing from our customers, as we will be testing for 5010 readiness with each Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouses will be able to support 4010 if a particular payer is not 5010 ready, and Kareo will support transmitting in 4010 if the payer has not upgraded to 5010.
Please stay tuned for more information about Kareo 5010 updates as we approach January 1, 2012.
Please note that this update to Kareo software will be provided at no charge, as are all of our updates. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us at Support@Kareo.com, via the Comments section of this blog, or on our Facebook page.

Hi, Kathy–
Here is what our 5010 expert advises:
Does the 9 digit zip code also need the slash after the 5th digit before inputting the last 4 digits?
Customers can include the dash but it is not required for the claim to process
Do all of the insurance companies have to have physical address’s rather than PO Box’s???
Insurance company plan addresses can be a P.O. Box, also the 9 digit zip code requirement is not required for Insurance company addresses or Patient addresses
We hope that helps clarify things!
