Areas of Focus

Building the Best EHR for Small Practices

Our product team and engineers are always hard at work building the best electronic health record (EHR) available for small practices. We appreciate our customers’ support and feedback in helping us to build a great product.

We are thrilled to announce our 2015 initiatives to deliver the features that you have asked for.

Regulatory

Complying with government mandates is complicated. We're committed to making the transition to ICD-10 as smooth as possible with code crosswalks and special training sessions. We’re also readying electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) in anticipation of further government regulation following New York State’s lead with I-STOP.

Mobile

Kareo’s goal is to bring you the most intuitive, easy-to-use, mobile EHR experience available. We’re redesigning the iPad and iPhone applications based on your input. Throughout this year we will be releasing ongoing enhancements to enable providers to move freely, accessing patient information and logging visits on the move.

Specialty Tailoring

Our intuitive design and ease of use makes us a popular EHR among both primary care providers and specialists. With flexible templates you can tailor your Kareo EHR charting not only to your specialty, but also to your own specific workflow and needs. Because we are free, it is simple to try us out to make sure we are a good fit for your specific needs.

EHR/PM Integration

This year we’ve made it a high priority to help you integrate your billing with your EHR in a way that fits your workflow and saves your practice time and clicks. To make this happen, we’ll be releasing enhancements to how the two systems share data and your ability to communicate across platforms.

Messaging

Spring 2015

To increase communication efficiency, we are working on enabling full featured, in application electronic messaging between providers, office staff, billers, and patients reducing the need for extra emails, phone calls, and faxes. We’re also working to integrate patient portal messages and Kareo Intercom notifications, reducing the need to login to extra portals. Users will be able to view messages from any screen in the app without the need to navigate away from their current screen.

On the mobile applications, users can be notified via push notification permissions when a new message is received.

Patient Portal

eRx & EPCS

Spring 2015

Kareo’s e-Prescribing feature allows you to quickly send scripts to pharmacies nationwide and receive refill requests right in your EHR. And e-Prescribing is now available on your iPad, so you can prescribe from anywhere. We will be working throughout 2015 on various improvements and brand new functionality.

We’re also very excited to announce that we have been working diligently this year to bring electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) to our customers in late spring/early summer 2015. To improve prescribing speed, we will be improving the pharmacy search capabilities, making it easier to modify an existing prescription and auto-filling the script to get you on your way.

Patient Portal Expansion

Labs

Fall 2015

You’ve asked for it and we’re making it happen—major improvements to our labs experience. We will be focused on improvements including ordering labs, viewing lab results, associating un-matched lab results with patients in the EHR, and signing-off of labs. We are also working on improving the overall eLabs enrollment experience.

Kareo ICD-10 Badge

ICD-10

Ongoing 2015

Kareo will fully support your practice through this transition with tools that provide ICD-10 translation support directly within your EHR workflows. Our trainings and tools will walk you through every step of the new ICD-10 coding process so you can easily learn the codes as you work avoiding disruption to your workflow.

Patient Portal Expansion

Filtering Notes & Templates by Specialty

Summer 2015

Specialty customization with filtering note types and templates will be released later this year. Users will be able to hide those specialty notes types and templates they don’t need. Administrators will be able to set and remove filters quickly from the admin section.

In addition to these features, we’re continuously optimizing every aspect of our EHR by improving design and overall usability and reducing clicks whenever possible.

As always, we will provide in-app and email notification alerts with release notes and training opportunities for every new feature as it is released.

Faster Charting

Notes Workflow Improvements

We made significant Notes workflow improvements so that you can easily view your patients' medical information and place orders directly within the Note. When you are charting, you now have the ability to view the patient's facesheet, previous notes, prescribed medications, lab results, immunizations, and documents. Furthermore, you can now place orders for medications and vaccines within the Plan section of the Note. But it get’s even better! You can also create your own custom text shortcuts to quickly enter frequently used phrases with in the Note, with just a few keystrokes.

Dashboard and Calendar Updates

Now you can manage and configure the Kareo EHR settings specific to your practice with one click. Our new left-side navigation allows you to easily scroll through all your Admin options, including updating your Practice Info, adding Service Locations, and managing your Calendar settings. Import and Export features are just a few of the many other things you can now access at with one click. Also now there is no need to leave your Note to access your documents. Simply hover your mouse over the Documents area, then with one click you can either View or Download.

Dashboard:

  • Tabs for scheduled, in office, finished
  • See patients’ contact information and reason for visit in expanded appointment view
  • View record and create note from dashboard
  • See and collect balance
  • Priority items on the right side check list

Calendar:

  • Color code Visit Reasons and personalize to your preference.
  • Add rooms to keep track of where patients are through the dashboard.
  • Setup provider-specific office hours and breaks that will automatically show up in the calendar.
  • Configure holidays that the practice observes.

Mark as Error

Users now have the ability to mark Problems, Allergies, Notes, and Medications, as an error.

  • The marked Problem will no longer show up in the Active List and will not appear when patient data is exported or in the Patient Portal. If you decide that you would like to restore a Problem back to active status, you can do that too.
  • Now you can mark Allergies as an error. The marked allergy will no longer show up in the Active List and will not appear when patient data is exported or in the Patient Portal. If you decide that you would like to restore an Allergy back to active status, you can do that too.

Referral Management with eFaxing

Users now have the ability to better manage contacts when sending Referrals by eFax. Referral history will be stored, such as the provider’s name, specialty and fax number for future quick reference. You can easily remove a fax contact by clicking on the X next to the contact’s name in the dropdown list. You can also include your Referral Notes and the Patient’s Summary of Care.
Note: Kareo EHR cannot directly accept faxes. A provider must receive faxes to their current physical fax machine. Once a fax is received, then scan the document into the Kareo EHR (i.e., PDF, .jpg) then attach it to the patient’s chart.
